Starting with the 1975 football season, the Florida High School Activities Association began the current method used by the state to determine district champions. The entire state was placed into new districts with a school required to play every other school in its district to qualify for a district championship. Games a team won or lost against non-district opponents would not count toward the district title.
This meant a berth in the state playoffs would have to be won on the field of play, not on points for wins and losses.
The prior system had existed for 12 years consisting of a points system for wins and losses to determine a district champion.
